Exciting news: our long-standing partnership with Microsoft has taken a new turn as we announce the availability of the official Hotmail App for Android, an app SEVEN developed and are jointly marketing with Microsoft.
First off, this is exciting for Hotmail users because it provides all of the advanced messaging capabilities of the market’s leading webmail service on their Android handsets. Check out some of the recent changes to the service on Microsoft’s Inside Windows Live blog.
Secondly, it’s exciting because it marks the first direct to consumer app for SEVEN. Millions of mobile users worldwide rely on SEVEN apps, but you are forgiven for not knowing that, since most of these apps are branded by the carrier or the handset manufacturer. Samsung is a good example, as its Social Hub Premium is powered by SEVEN.
This is a strategy that we will continue to pursue. Both our major new product initiatives – Open Channel and Ping – will appear on Android devices courtesy of a carrier or device maker. Indeed, the carrier gets as much benefit out of our highly efficient mobile apps and traffic optimization solutions as the end user gets out of our easy-to-use, desktop-like user interface.
But going direct to the consumer has its perks as well. It’s a much faster time-to-market and customer feedback is direct and prompt. Look for more apps from SEVEN to hit the Android Market before the end of the year.

I have a Toshiba Thrive with Android 3.1. When I went to download your Hotmail app, there was a note that your app was not compatible with my Toshiba. Do you have a work-around or know when the app will upgraded?

The app is currently marked as supporting 2.x devices. We’re working on a 3.x version but don’t have a specific date yet.

Any way of combining folders in one combined inbox (e.g. anything in your inbox, family and work folders appear as one combined “front” folder) rather than having to go to individual subfolders?
The mobile app follows the same behavior as Hotmail on the web and brings the hierarchy of folders down to your device. This seems to be the least confusing behavior as the app will behave the same on the device as on the computer.

True, but it doesn’t seem to give the same level of notification that there is new mail in a folder other than Inbox. Couldn’t this be included on the “All E-mails” tab (which in my case is no different from the Hotmail tab, as I only have one account.
Incidentally – does the app really need to be quite so large (biggest app on my phone), and if so can it be moved to the SD card? I realise there is a widget, but couldn’t this be separated out? Battery drain also seems to be a little on the high side.

in general, we try to mirror the behavior of the app on the web as much as possible. Good suggestion on using the “all emails” tab for all email including sub-folders… At the same time, I could foresee many users not liking this because they use subfolders to avoid having their Inbox flooded with less important messages.
We’ve published several updates to the app to decrease the size of the file significantly and are actively looking at the SD card option.

Been looking for an ap like this for ages – great work !!! One thing am I being thick or is there no sign in sign out facility ? If not why not – I don’t lock my phone but I do lock private accounts like hotmail, facebook, googlemail banking etc. I may be in a minority doing things this way but couldn’t harm to have a simple signout option could it ? Other than this small annoyance I LOVE the ap.
You can lock your Hotmail account (and any other email accounts you get access to through the SEVEN Mobile App). Under Menu >> Account Settings >> General Setting, you’ll find the ability to create a Pincode to lock/unlock the application.

If I go to account settings option email I see on the bottom a Reply to header but the option greyed out. I would like to use this option how should I proceed?

In order to enable this feature, you would need to have more than 1 Hotmail account setup so that you could choose the default account which emails are sent from. Hope this answers your question. Thanks!
That’s no good. I want to use Hotmail as gmail drives me spare.
So there is no way to make a message appear as though it’s from gmail when using this app (unlike if I log into the website)?
Currently this feature is not supported in the Hotmail App, as an alternative option you can change your signature to reflect your preferences, but the ‘from’ email address will still appear as your Hotmail account. Stay tuned for updates and and new features which SEVEN and Microsoft are continuing to develop.
Are there any plans to move this app to the Kindle Fire? The email options there are terrible and this would be a great addition. Bonus points if you can sync the hotmail contacts with the Kindle’s contact list.

I feel this is a potentially great app for Windows Live Mail users like myself. However, I feel there are some shortcomings which need to be addressed in future versions:
-Editing contacts on the phone is not supported
-No Conversation view
-Cannot sync more than 30 days of messages
I think adding these would make this app a far larger success
Can you supply a link to the APK file in order that is can be downloaded and tested with ICS, as it is unavailable directly from the Market.

PLEASE! I have a Galaxy Nexus with ICS and use Hotmail exclusively. I am growing weary of hearing the market tell me this app is not available to me. 😦 Help!

Pincode feature on kindle fire does not work everytime. If i close the app & immediately or even wait 15 seconds to reopen, the app will show all messages without having to enter code.. not good

Hi, I still have the same issue as red above does, and I’m on HTC Flyer. Also, my son and I share the tablet, and both have hotmail accounts, so we want to be able to pin lock each of our accounts separately ie – not the whole app as that doesn’t stop us reading each others emails! Either that or be able to log out as per normal Hotmail. Is this possible?
Very nice to finally see an app that links to hotmail properly. Here are a few observations that keep me from being a daily user, however:
1. Even though push notification appears to be in place, older messages that are deleted directly via the hotmail site do not get removed from Seven’s hotmail app inbox 😦 Inbox synchronization seems to break easily.
2. There should be a way for wifi tablet users to automatically have this app download the images for each email rather than requiring a button press for every message!
3. There should be action buttons such as “delete message” always available on screen when reading emails!

Really like the app, as it’s easy in use for reading my mail on the android phone. One thing is a bit annoying: I don’t receive a notification for new mail that is directly placed in a folder (which relates to the feedback Graphite has given). This does however reflect the behaviour of Hotmail on the web, which is why I primarily reported this to Hotmail directly. In their answer, they suggested to contact you on this matter as well – done;-)
Another slightly annoying aspect is that deleted emails on the phone are considered ‘unread’ in the deleted items folder when using Hotmails website…

Just wondering if anyone can help?
My Mum has a HTC Sensation phone on the telstra network in Australia. She has the hotmail android app on it. She changed her hotmail password online. When she tried to then open her hotmail android it wouldnt work (I cant work out if she got to to update the password on there too). Now it is asking for a ‘pin code’ and counting down the tries untill the ‘account is deleted’. I am completely stumped as to where I can ge this pincode from. I have listed her mobile on hotmail but the code it sends to the phone is to access online hotmail (ie. not the right pincode). Please can you help? 🙂
I use the app on multiple devices without problems, but in my newly purchased Motorola Xoom 2 do not have the same luck. The app hangs after some time of use, restart the machine.
Is there any objection to that?
Why can’t I have emails for more than 30 days. Without syncing all emails in my inbox or any folders for that matter makes this app useless.
will there be an update for android to be able to edit synced contacts on phone….i really like his app but not being able to edit contacts is very frustrating as i have to create new contact for someone already a contact whenever i need to edit….i hope u can fix this soon
This is a problem common to all 3rd party apps that have to use the native Android address book, there’s been changes in Android APIs that have created problems for all 3rd party apps. We’re working on it.We’re now dependent of firmware updates from OEMs, but it’s coming.
I’m not sure if it’s because I’m running Jelly Bean 4.1.1, but the attachments are not being downloaded. Will you be updating the app to make it JB compatible any time soon?
We have identified an issue with attachment and Jelly Bean 4.1.1. A fix has been made and is currently in QA. We will issue an update shortly.
Please work fast on making it compatible with regards to attachments download on Jelly Bean 4.1.1. Its been more than two months since its release now. People are desperately trying to set up the revised hotmail (outlook) on the integrated email exchange app rather! If possible upgrade the UI to the new outlook and try to make its simpler intuitive like the stock Gmail/Exchange app.
